Working in a distribution centre

Our four warehouses at Avonmouth, near Bristol are home to around 570 people. We’re the engine room of Nisbets, ensuring our customers get their products when and where they need them.

Join us and you could be involved in a range of activities, from picking and packing parcels for next day delivery and processing returns, to ensuring our 32 UK and Ireland stores are fully stocked. You could even contribute to other services, such as special deliveries or in store fitting. It’s all about giving our customers the best possible service.

Distribution centre roles available

Warehouse Operative

You’ll be involved in everything coming in or going out of the warehouse. This involves unloading containers and making sure certain products are stored in the right place, as well as making sure customer orders are processed and sent out safely and securely, so they arrive in excellent condition.

To keep things running smoothly, you’ll need to keep an eye out for shortages, products in the wrong position and damaged goods and report them. Not to mention keeping your work area tidy and considering health and safety.

Team Leader

You’ll lead a team to ensure they meet their daily targets and to make sure your area runs smoothly. As well as briefing, motivating and developing your team, you’ll carry out annual appraisals and keep an eye on productivity and health and safety. This will include running reports when required and monitoring equipment to ensure it’s always in full working order.

Working closely with the Team Leaders, you’ll lead a full shift. This will involve ensuring that all targets for the day are being met and that health and safety is a priority. As well as managing people on your shift when necessary, you’ll also liaise with a variety of external suppliers to ensure that all equipment is well-maintained and delivers its optimum output.

You’ll plan the day-to-day operation of your warehouse to meet business needs by ensuring all orders are despatched on time and in full. This will cover everything from managing production schedules and minimising downtime to stock control planning, rolling stock checks and optimisation of space. You’ll also need to plan and manage costs, staffing levels, staff development and health and safety. In short, you’ll keep your warehouse running smoothly and efficiently to meet business needs.

Training and development

To make sure you’re fully equipped to make the most of your potential, we’re committed to giving you every opportunity to develop your skills and build a rewarding career here.

From initial training in using the different machinery in our warehouses to refresher courses and health and safety, including first aid, you’ll find everything you need to build your abilities. It’s up to you to make the most of it. 

Manual handling

Everyone who joins our warehouses goes through manual handling training. Combining theory with a practical assessment, it gives you the basic skills you’ll need to work safely here.

Power pallet truck

If your role involves driving a power pallet truck (PPT), you’ll receive a full day’s training with one of our external providers.

VNA training

This specialist five-day training gives you all the skills you need to use our Narrow Aisle High Vehicle Truck. Roles using the truck involve greater responsibility and we always advertise them internally first. We’ll even give you a refresher course if you haven’t used the machinery for a while.

Counter balance training

On the five-day external counter balance training course, you’ll gain valuable skills that offer opportunities for more responsibility. You’ll also have access to refresher courses if you have a period when you haven’t used the equipment.

Health and safety training

We offer a range of health and safety training courses, including a three-day First Aid at Work course that prepares you to be a first-aider in your team. You’ll also have access to defibrillator (AED) and accident investigation training courses.

Safe Systems of Work training

We want all our people to be safe at work, so we’ll give you on-the-job training in all aspects of safe systems of work.
